This parish used to be in the Wapentake of Staincross. liberty of Pontefract in the West Riding of Yorkshire until around the year 1900, when wapentakes were discontinued. The parish included Hemsworth Lane End, Hemsworth Lodge (one house), Hemsworth Marsh, Kinsley Hose, Newstead Hall, Royd Moor (a farm house), and Vissit (a farm house).
